FDEP: F.S. 403.813(1)(f) exempts maintenance dredging of existing manmade canals and channels to their previously permitted depth (or no deeper than 5 ft below mean low water if none), with spoil placed on a self-contained upland site; new dredging needs an ERP. [leg.state.fl.us]
- Dredging permits
- FDEP / USACE Jacksonville District (+ Palm Beach County ERM, FIND for the ICW). FDEP: F.S. 403.813(1)(f) exempts maintenance dredging of existing manmade canals and channels to their previously permitted depth (or no deeper than 5 ft below mean low water if none), with spoil placed on a self-contained upland site; new dredging needs an ERP. [leg.state.fl.us]
- Seawall permits
- City of West Palm Beach Building Division + FDEP + USACE. FDEP: F.S. 403.813(1)(e) exempts restoration of seawalls at their previous location, upland of it, or within 18 inches waterward of it; 403.813(1)(i) covers seawalls in artificially created waterways. [leg.state.fl.us]
- Dredging permits
- FDEP / USACE Jacksonville District (+ Palm Beach County ERM, FIND for the ICW, SFWMD for C-51). FDEP: F.S. 403.813(1)(f) exempts maintenance dredging of existing manmade canals and channels to their previously permitted depth (or no deeper than 5 ft below mean low water if none), with spoil placed on a self-contained upland site; new dredging needs an ERP. - Conditions
- Hurricane Nicole (2022): 2.58 ft above MHHW at the NOS Lake Worth gauge; Irma (2017): inundation generally 1-2 ft at the county's beachfront [nhc.noaa.gov]
- Dredging permits
- FDEP / USACE Jacksonville District (+ Palm Beach County ERM, which dredges the inlet sand trap). FDEP: F.S. 403.813(1)(f) exempts maintenance dredging of existing manmade canals and channels to their previously permitted depth (or no deeper than 5 ft below mean low water if none), with spoil placed on a self-contained upland site; new dredging needs an ERP. Broward County: permits and shared rules
- On the water
- Broward ICW general manatee rule (FAC 68C-22.010): slow speed within 50 ft of shorelines and a 25 mph maximum outside that buffer wherever no other zone applies. [law.cornell.edu]
- On the water
- Hillsboro Inlet District calls it "a hazardous inlet, local knowledge is required": transit at idle speed, "current at bridge can run at six knots", ebb pushes boats toward the south reef, and "moving sands reduce inlet depth". [hillsboroinletdistrict.org]
- On the water
- Hillsboro Inlet District (created 1957, funded mainly by ad valorem taxes from Dixie Hwy to the ocean and the county line to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea) runs its own hydraulic dredge with a crew of five to keep the channel open and bypass sand south; the 1964 configuration cut the rock reef to 10 ft with a 400-ft south jetty and 200-ft north jetty, and a 2002 rock-dredging project deepened the outer channel toward 20 ft. [hillsboroinletdistrict.org]
- On the water
- Hillsboro Inlet (SR A1A) drawbridge opens on signal, except 7 a.m. to 6 p. [townofhillsborobeach.com]
- Conditions
- May 2026: nor'easters in March and April shoaled the Hillsboro Inlet channel and kept the district dredge idle; one charter captain reported 3.5 ft under his boat hours after high tide, and the district chair said "we couldn't keep it deep enough". [dredgewire.com]
- Conditions
- NOAA South Port Everglades station (8722956): mean tide range 2.5 ft, great diurnal range 2.79 ft; mean higher high water sits about 0.57 ft above NAVD88 (MHHW 26.91 vs NAVD88 26.34 on the station datum). [api.tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov]
- Conditions
- Broward County's seawall policy presentation: typical high tide about 0.4 ft NAVD88 today, king tides 1.5 to 1.8 ft, a 33%-annual-chance surge under 2.5 ft; by 2060 typical high tide about 2.6 ft. Existing county seawalls average 2.5 to 3 ft NAVD88 (minimum -1.6 to 1 ft). [hallandalebeachfl.gov]
- Conditions
- County modeling: even with seawalls raised to 4 ft NAVD, overtopping is expected "in Las Olas and Hollywood with small storm surge" by 2060. [hallandalebeachfl.gov]
Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County: permits and shared rules
- Seawall permits
- Town of Golden Beach + Miami-Dade DERM (RER) Class I + FDEP. [miamidade.gov]
- Dredging permits
- Miami-Dade DERM Class I + FDEP + USACE Jacksonville District. Maintenance dredging of an existing man-made canal is exempt from a state ERP under F.S. 403.813(1)(f) only if spoil goes to a self-contained upland site; DERM treats maintenance dredging with upland disposal as a short-form Class I permit. [miamidade.gov]
- On the water
- Bakers Haulover Inlet is the ocean exit for north Miami-Dade: a 32-ft fixed-clearance bridge crosses the inlet channel at ICW mile 1080, depths were reported holding at 12 ft, and currents run 4-6 knots. [marinas.com]
- Conditions
- At NOAA's Haulover Inlet station (8723073) MHHW is +0.27 ft NAVD and MLLW is -1.94 ft NAVD, and the 2017 king tide peaked at about 2.2 ft NAVD, so a wall cap only 3 ft above NAVD has roughly 10 inches of freeboard at a king tide (Bay Harbor Islands seawall study, 2019). [bayharborislands-fl.gov]
- Conditions
- King tides run September-November; the county's 2026 peak windows are Oct 7-13 and Oct 24-30, and it warns boaters that high tides reduce clearance under bridges. [miamidade.gov]
- Conditions
- Hurricane Irma (2017) inundation along the Biscayne Bay shoreline north of downtown Miami was generally 2-3 ft (NWS Miami survey). [weather.gov]
- Conditions
- Miami-Dade County Code sec. 24-48 requires a DERM (RER) Class I permit before any work in, on, over or upon tidal waters or coastal wetlands anywhere in the county, including inside every municipality; docks, seawalls, boat lifts, davits, mooring/fender piles, dredging and filling all count. [miamidade.elaws.us]
- Seawall permits
- Town of Bay Harbor Islands + Miami-Dade DERM (RER) Class I + FDEP. [miamidade.gov]
